As Kopila predominantly use raw fibre obtained from animals, our animal welfare policy and actions are critical within our sustainability claims. The welfare of an animal is monitored through legitimate industry approved accreditation through our partnership from April 2023 with The Good Cashmere Standard® by AbTF.
The criteria for both goats and sheep are:
Feed, water, and nutrition.
Indoor/outdoor living conditions.
Health, heard, breeding and kid management.
Physical alterations.
Combing and shearing.
Handling and transport.
Euthanasia and slaughter.
We believe no animal should be subjected to hunger, thirst, discomfort, pain, injury or disease. Animals must have the freedom to express normal behaviour and live lives free from fear and distress. Legitimacy and transparency is provided through animal welfare certification ( GCS ) from our yarn producer.
Kopila use guidelines set by The Animal Welfare Council as their policy:
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst By ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigour.
Freedom from Discomfort By providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease By prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour By providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
Freedom from Fear and Distress By ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
